UMN UnderGraduate REsearch Symposium

The University of Minnesota 2023 Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium was held on August 10, 2023 at McNamara Alumni Center in Minneapolis. High school and undergraduate interns from the M-ASCEND: Advancing Science, Enhancing Diversity Program* participated in the poster session. Two of the undergraduate interns from M-ASCEND were mentored by C2DREAM members and completed their summer research projects on work within C2DREAM projects and cores. 

M-ASCEND is a theoretically guided, evidence-driven program designed to support the academic persistence of high school and undergraduate students underrepresented in science and promote their developmental progress toward future careers in cancer research through a 9-week internship where students receive hands-on research experience, mentorship, and academic and professional development.

"Sticking With It: Recruitment Strategies for Greater BIPOC Involvement in Clinical Trials", Rosa Gerdts; Lynn Andreae, PhD; Steven Fu, MD; Sandra Japuntich, PhD

Rosa Gerdts and her mentor Sandra Japuntich measured the impact on recruitment for Project SCORE by sending enhanced recruitment brochures with a sticker noting it was from their provider but not a bill on the envelope compared to normal recruitment envelopes without stickers.

"Evaluating the Experiences of Community and Academic Members on Advisory Boards", Tasha Beyioku-Alase; Yasamin Graff, MPH; Derek Hersch, MPH; Sida Ly-Xiong, MPH; Michele Allen, MD, MS

Tasha Beyioku-Alase and her mentor Michele Allen piloted a survey evaluating community and academic members' experiences on advisory groups. The tool was created during a Community of Practice co-developed by Michele Allen, Sida Ly-Xiong, and the CE Core.
